While it's understandable to want to help friends and coworkers reach certain milestones (you see these sort of posts all the time on twitter) I think this is self-defeating in the long-term. If YouTube is throwing content to someone subbed to them and they're not actually watching, YouTube is less likely to recommend that creator's videos to new viewers, stifling future organic growth. Same for people that get big by shorts but are really trying to monetize streaming content and get a bunch of "empty" subs.

However, if you aren't planning on releasing content in the future under that account, I suppose this inorganic, self-defeating growth doesn't really matter.

Pretty sure that was patched out after Pirate Software exploited that by not setting his shorts to be broadcast to his subs, so they would get recommended to new viewers instead of potentially dead/currently inactive subs on his channel, preventing them from dragging down the engagement.
