GDPR is actually very strictly and aggressively enforced in any case where you can actually get the state apparatus to bother doing something. You would need a solid case and a willingness to bang your head against the doors of bored, feckless bureaucratic middle-managers for a few months at bare minimum to get something going, but when the ponderous mechanisms of state kick into gear, they hand out things like 350,000 euro fines for a single security camera displaying a sliver of a neighbour's empty driveway for an hour a week. It's not even legal for me to write down my neighbour's address without their explicit consent under GDPR.

Actual penalty enforcement is pretty much a non factor unless you are repeatedly fucking up in a major manor (etc. multiple data breaches) and have ignored any previous requests to rectify the issue. The average gdpr complaint usually gets settled with a single letter from whatever regulatory body is responsible for data protection in that nation. Even then most of these are just the gov telling you "you must have a written policy that includes xyz, write one, publish it somewhere publically viewable and don't do it again".

GDPR only applies to "living identifiable persons", property is not counted. You may be getting confused with a case concerning other privacy laws.

its not that straight forward and depends on what other data you have and if that can identify the address to a person, even then depending on what your intended use is you could claim "legitimate interest" and still collect the data without consent. But at this point your getting into "letter of the law vs spirit of the law" territory.

I have no idea if it was reported anywhere publicly, I heard it from a lawyer in personal conversation.

Edit: For some clarification, this was a case where the guy with the camera refused all demands to move it for years on end from both the neighbour and the state, not just a random 'lol here's a fine' drive-by.

I think your referencing fairhurst Vs woodard in which case yes it was more down to the guy lieing about what his cameras were recording, ignoring all data access and deletion requests and then harassing his neighbour by sending them pictures he had taken of them using the cameras. However It was civil case and not a GDPR fine.

I'll never not take the opportunity to call the requiring IDs racist because Progressives are so damn annoying on topics like that.

Not trusting offkai staff is understandable and I won't fault anyone for that. If such a thing does happen, I'll take the L. However, the ID policy in of itself is pretty common.

If they clarify no record keeping, they'll probably avoid any issues, but, yeah, they've shown they have people that will abuse any avenue and it's their own fault for causing any issues.

Honestly, good on them. That's really thinking outside the box for sponsorship. More conventions should really get different Fed Agencies to have booths. (This is actually not a joke, given the actual demographics of Vtuber fans.)

I really don't get why Offkai or even other cons that are being cited by the "I got nothing to hide" types, would need IDs from attendees just to meet a vtuber, let alone attend the con in question. It's nobody's business to know the personal info of their attendees, not the con staff, the vendors, or even the vtuber(s) at the con in question. There's other cons that don't require an ID to attend or even meet celebs there. If they're worried about scalpers, just implement some non-intrusive forms of authentication.

San Jose (where the con is) and LA are about a 6 hour drive apart (~340 miles). Rather hard to have a physical crossover with that distance.

LA is also big enough that a lot of people that live there can be near completely unaffected by the riot. Unless the riot turns into George Floyd riots 2.0, I don't think we'll see that shit at the con.

My opinion on the matter is that there absolutely is a chance that people could do something bad with your ID, but crux of this argument is how likely that chance is.

I absolutely understand the people who have decided that OffKai is untrustworthy. There's a lot of evidence that they have engaged in issues regarding Phase before, and I can see how they probably have some volunteers who'd be more than willing to ruin people's lives through doxxing and harassment. Their level of unprofessionalism even now is blatant as a volunteer-run event.

But I also think that the chance of that happening has diminished greatly since the years past mainly because Sakana has quashed any and all who oppose him with an iron fin - and a lot of money. The bigger issue at hand seems to be whether or not you're a fan of Kirsche - that would more than likely get you a lot of mean looks from staff - but being a fan of Phase doesn't automatically mean you're a fan of Kirsche, and hating Kirsche doesn't mean you automatically hate Phase Connect. I mean, look at JL7ten and the rest of the Capippicord Crew, they loathe her but are obsessive towards Pippa and Phase. Kirsche's been trying to make that connection with her most recent tweet and frankly I think it's a disingenuous argument, since those who go to OffKai for Phase already hate her guts. She's not gonna convince anybody to cancel their ticket over it, and It doesn't even seem like anybody who actually is going to OffKai is complaining at all because I imagine none of them feel like they're at any risk anyway. Pippa doesn't even have a M&G this year, so it makes no sense for people to complain about getting carded going into Pippa's (nonexistent) booth.

It's ultimately a fruitless endeavor to complain about it now. OffKai staff have successfully made the biggest deterrent to fans they consider a "liability" by announcing this in advance whether intentionally or not, and will likely end up far happier without the filthy chuds coming. They lose nothing from this, at least nothing they wouldn't care to lose in the first place aside from "trust" they had already lost among parties who've hated them for years now.

I feel like this wouldn’t have been a big deal if it was any other con so I think it’s worth giving them the benefit of the doubt - innocent until proven guilty and all that.

Besides, do you really think a 17 year old con volunteer would care enough to even look at the ID you hand to them? One of them even helped me photoshop my birthdate on my phone last time to get into a movie screening!
