As an unironic theater kid and 2-bit actor, that's the whole point. You're supposed to at least for the duration of the part conflate yourself with the character such that you can deliver the most genuine acting as well as add your own personality to the mix.
This is why so many hollywood people are out of touch with reality - it's literally their job to disassociate and they're not great at separating work from social life.
