The beauty of Mexican cuisine is supplanted to suit our preference in spite of whatever value or beauty exists in Mexican food. Just as we have a wonderful rural field we place a piece of concrete and asphalt on it debasing and transforming what was nature’s beauty. The American sees this and smiles. Another layer at work is Americans have a car culture that is not expressed over in Europe. An American may drive twenty minutes to go to his Taco Bell and sit in the parking lot, eating it, then drive home. An hour trip dedicated to eating zogslop, the American is happy. This is the new purpose he created. He is able to look around at beautiful scenery as he crunches his tacos, listening or watching whatever he choses. There is no lament in this behavior for the average American. No upset feelings about what we have done to our nature to satiate our impulse for “Mexican” food. It’s both a critique of America and a celebration of us. The European is both being called ignorant and being complimented for their general respect of their country’s land.
