The GE (and mechanics like it) immediately warp the community and culture around them, creating the atomised and asocial experience people now complain about. Same as the WoW classic stuff with raid finder and so on. If you want an MMO to actually be social, you have to force it, and the GE is the biggest barrier to actually recreating the old Runescape experience.
