I don't understand this attitude at all.
I pay for this forum.
I run this forum.
I am objectively, in every way imaginable, the one person you should avoid pissing off at all costs.
I cannot think of any other forum owner who would allow somebody to be so egregiously antagonistic towards them as I do. Anyone who thinks Null doesn't do it is a retard. In 99.9% of all communities I have ever been a part of, directly mouthing off to the moderators/owners/etc is an automatically ban-worthy offense.
It is legitimately unfathomable to me why anyone here with even the smallest fraction of knowledge of how to interact with their fellow man would not view my attitude as permissive in the extreme, and berate me for not cracking down far sooner and far more aggressively.
You're not wrong, but I'd argue that Rrat and Short were in the same state you were (are) in, aggravated and in for a fight they wouldn't ordinarily pick, out of a mixture of the forum's established culture and the action they disagreed with being perceived as "Tako made my internet girlfriend leave, BANS FOR EVERYONE!"
I'd wager that they'd have reacted dramatically different if it'd been a one week ban. Or a ban at any time Tako antagonised someone not so thoroughly linked to you. Or a permaban from just the Discord.
Neither has any history of being this antagonistic towards anyone (Short especially. Addendum: I didn't know about Discord happenings when writing this, but it also just adds to my conviction that Discord will always be a mistake).
I'm not going to argue that their posts weren't retarded. Inviting debate, they were not. And I doubt Rrat (it being a tempban aside) has any particular desire to return.
But the forum's culture
does include casually insulting everyone with no one taking genuine offense. Add a general loss of control on your part (and you can't tell me that the smug reply to and permaban of Rrat were the actions of someone in control of themselves) which further fanned the flames and led to a similar loss of control on their part, plus the general and widely shared feeling that TVA just experienced its fall from paradise, and well, you get what we just got.
Given the forum's culture, this was probably inevitable from the moment Tako got permabanned in the fashion he was. The way to prevent it was to slow down escalation (as was done in previous cases of permabans, sockpuppets and drive bys excluded). Too late for that now.
Alas, I'm pretty sure that there's no way back to the TVA of yesterday. That's unfortunate. But I believe it also explains a great deal of the incredibly negative reaction by a large part of the userbase, since their paradise has, indeed, just been lost.
