A polyamorous relationship comes about purely from degeneracy. Now it is generally human instinct of course to mate, Genghis Khan fucked everything. However humans are monogamous, so once they have a mate then that desire is fullfilled. Unless you are a mutant (which these people do exist), you only have one dick so there is no real advantage to fucking multiple chicks at once in a natural setting.
That spiel out of the way, these relationships come about usually because one partner does not feel fulfilled. These relationships are not emotionally fulfilling and can be damaging for the individual who does not initiate said relationship. It is extremely emotionally compromising.
