Lucky Star is a Josh approved anime. I remember trying Azumanga Diao after it and I thought it was shit.
I watched all of Dragon Ball Z on YT.

I remember Wolf's Rain from Adult Swim and thinking it was deep. I refuse to rewatch it as it's probably shit now that I'm older.
There were very limited options for a long time.

Lucky Star was enjoyable as a comedy, Azumanga had that weird over the top anime style to it that was popular back then which I hated. More modern Slice of Life is much more toned down and better.
For a while it was Toonami and Adult Swim, then Youtube had stuff but unless you were talking to people who shared links to projects you'd find random shit online on Youtube.
It was trash!
