My rrat is he was prepping to sell the company off, trying to clean up the image as he shopped it around to multiple buyers. It would have been a safe business move to sell off and disappear with the money before the vtuber bubble burst and right before hitting the company's peak popularity. But at some point (as you said) something happened to make him relent and realize he's stuck in whether he likes it or not.
I hope he realizes the niche Phase has carved for itself is why it rose to where it is. Five years ago I was a .Live fan who started loving Hololive because they were a bunch of crass weirdos. Phase is making me feel a similar way as Holo has started focusing on idol content (and not streaming for some...). Hearing "Am I allowed to talk about this on stream?" constantly isn't any fun for neither the streamer or viewer.

Ehem imma try being the most positive possible.
1. There is a huge divide in fandom, twitch viewers doesn't watch youtube vtuber and youtube vtuber fan doesn't watch twitch vtuber.
2. The divide also shows in the vtubers themselves, while most youtube vtuber tries to be as close to being a hololive/nijisanji member/be an idol. Twitch vtubers usually doesn't and some of them aren't afraid to stream with their real faces/real body randomly, engage in horny shit and some of them literally do porn work (Projekt Melody/CottontailVA)
3. There are more varieties in twitch and they are not strictly live2D models, some example Zentreya (dont know what she uses, uses a voice changer), CodeMiko (Unreal engine), Filian (who uses VRchat only and really good at it) and the rising star of this year is Neuro-sama (an actual AI programmed by a guy - the turtle on her head),
4. There are alot more independents on twitch than youtube.

Shxtou, probs the most idol like vtuber on twitch (male), who farms girl audience and does singing.
Bao - mostly known for being a horny furry masochist vtuber?
Shylily - idk why all dolphin twitch tubers are horny furry masochist, but so does she
Chibidoki - very big head, funny, chaotic
Onigiri - mainly does cooking with a really nice setup.
5. Vshojo is the 3rd biggest corpos in the west, farming twitch watchers (only behind HoloEN and NijiEN). Their current biggest Twitch chuuba is Ironmouse streams alot, literally disabled and is a really good singer. Henya is just straight up a reincarnated youtube vtuber
6. Unlike hololive walled garden aproach, twitch tubers collab with each other alot, corpo or noncorpo
7. Wont name any small ones (more like i dont watch any and you asked for representatives). There are also alot of normal streamers who get live2d models just for the sake of it. Won't name anyone because fuck them.
8. I used random chinese subbed clips on youtube, but you probs can find better clips on bilibili. My personal ranking goes Chibi >= Henya dont care about the rest.

Seems like a couple of months ago Horayo deleted her old accounts and talked about stopping this kind of behaviour supposedly out of regret but she also seemed to imply it was because of a threat of legal action from Kuro. Well, her new twitter account and her pinned message seem to confirm the fact that there was some sort of legal threat. So if she continues with this kind of schizo behaviour there's a chance it escalates further and further
