It's very easy to just not take heroin.
I can sympathise with addicts when it's something like alcohol that people encounter in polite society and just don't notice their limits until too late, but you'd have to be retarded to do heroin in the first place, and you have to be hanging around shady people for it to be possible in the first place.

Honestly, it's a disturbingly accurate descriptor a lot of the time.
After 20 years with no improvement it's pretty clear they're not interested. They're just keeping you around as an enabler, best to just move on. Unfortunate that it's a family member but that's how it is, addicts are animals once they're in deep enough.
One caveat is that for decades doctors have been over prescribing opiates in mass (Perdue Pharma lawsuits come to mind). Even for minor surgeries people will/would be given 20-40+ of an opiate like Oxycontin and told to take 1-2 every 6-8h for 2+ weeks and that's how addiction starts. It is their choice to go buy H or seek out pills after the fact, but there is a large amount of medical negligence/malpractice that has transpired in the US that makes me feel for some of the opiate addicts.
