I'm guessing it was that they wanted to make it different than the book and shorten it for the medium. I'm not sure if the Hayes Code played a part as drinking was pretty prominent and I think that wasn't allowed.

That was probably one of the best of these films, had a really good momentum to it and didn't feel like an arsepull ending like most of them from that era.

I'm just sad we were robbed of some of the more baller things the judge originally said, like musing at the contradiction of his two passions in life (justice and his bloodlust), how he reconciled it by sentencing as many criminals to death as he could, and how he tossed a message in a bottle with his confession in it as part of a "pathetic human need for recognition."

Either way, movie was fun, loved how much Pippa was digging it, and I hope she gets that tooth fixed soon.
