I'd actually say it was Nijisanji's fault, because Selen was treated so badly that everyone, regardless of how long they'd been in the sphere, thought that Selen was treated unfairly and didn't mind dropping previous norms and referred everyone to Selen's new account and openly discussed her previous life. It also fueled matters when Doki decided to do stuff like name her fanbase the "Dragoons" to show that she didn't really care for previously-accepted norms either.

IMO those norms were unsustainable and always going to crumble sooner or later, Selen was just the trigger. No other industry manages to so utterly suppress their performers' identities. Takarazuka (where idol culture inherits a lot of its norms from) credits the performers under their real names at the end of every show, there's just a fan norm of using their stage names. A few of the more ruthless idol agencies have been trying to control their talents through controlling their stage names in recent years (hence the law we talked about) but it's never been the norm and fans don't generally go along with it. Ironically given this forum's views on whores, the industry that comes closest to that level of secrecy (where the same performer might work under two or more names and keep them completely separate) is porn or yes brothels, and they also use a "safety" excuse to justify it. But even those don't maintain the cast-iron kayfabe that some people want.

Japan has musicians and pop stars who are not idols right. Dancers too, idols are a specific form of brain rot. Like Metalcore

Yes and no. Japan has a completely different culture of what it means to be an entertainer, in some ways it's like going back to the '30s. Even if you're an e.g. metal band, how a Japanese audience treats you and expects you to act is going to be as an "idol", not in terms of the kind of music they expect you to make but in terms of what the fans want from you and what you do to promote yourself.

Anti-idols still do a lot of activities typical of idols, like meet-and-greets and concerts, but anti-idols are more about eschewing idol-like behavioural norms, pushing boundaries, and not being politically or socially "correct".

I'd say that's a false distinction to make in the first place. Even what we now think of as classic idols like Onyanko Club were pushing boundaries in their day.

Idol culture has always been broad and something that affects the whole culture, in the same way that e.g. the BBC light entertainment complex shaped the whole of British music/popular culture up until at least the 1970s.

I apparently had merchandise from Phase connect arrive today. Completely forgot about the Pippa 333k and Panko Water bottle I ordered. I've realized this is all a part of fishman's genius level marketing tactic. If I can't remember or look up what I ordered off the shop and it arrives several months after I ordered it, it's like a fuckin' blind lootbox.
