WRECKFEST 2, March 20th, 2025 early access release

Legally Mandated Demolition Derby is always a good time, but now I'm worried they're somehow going to mess it up! The gaming industry is fucked, where a sequel to a beloved game causes fans of said game to potentially worry about its quality! There have been so many cases in the past few years alone that it's now the default to be skeptical!

If it does, indeed, suck ass, there's always the first game to go back to and crash cars at high speeds. Surely, they won't de-list WRECKFEST due to licensing nonsense like so many of these other car/racing games, right?

Good year for racing games already, with this and Tokyo Xtreme Racer (and hopefully Wreckcreation) :optimistic:

Did you like the first? Ok, then play it. It's the same game but more. Well, except it actually is optimized on release this time.

So hard pass, it is.

Interesting, Koreans will be publishing the not-Arkane Austin (Prey 2017)'s not-BioShock.

Yeah, if you didn't like the characters or combat of the first, it hasn't changed, so there will be nothing there to pull people who didn't like it in. Even the save system is the same, despite it being pretty widely disliked. Though, I am sure that will be modded to remove the potions like people did with the first game.

How much of that studio is actually Arkane Austin? I loved Prey 2017.

Oh I was wrong, looks like it's more original French Arkane than Austin, although pre-Dishonored 2. Still good pedigree; I'd say the shittery started at Dishonored 2.
Raphael was the director of Prey though.

Also the combat is less stiff and you can't just Master Strike cheese the game into oblivion. Henry also isn't a jobber at the start so you don't need to grind with Ivan Trainerovski for 5 hours before actually playing the game.

All ive seen from KCD2 is the kiwi thread that circlejerked around the Mansa Musa bit and the sudden Hans gay sex
honestly kinda hilarious, i dont know why people expected it to not get pozzed. It being one of the only real mainstream examples where standing your ground was met with resounding success and the eventual cult appeal of KCD even among normies made it prime target for culture war tism. Vavra wasnt even as based as people wanted him to be besides supporting or being ambivalent towards gamergay

Gay politics aside ill probably wait for a sale regardless. I enjoyed the first game but im short on cash

Is it really sudden if they had massive Gaius & Aulus, best friends forever, but with more overt gayness, vibes going for the entire first game?

Capcom shadowdropped a Monster Hunter Wilds benchmark on Steam. And boy do I have a problem with it.
It benchmarks a cutscene, the open world area, and then a cutscene. The open world area runs just as ass as the beta demo and doesn't actually fight any monsters. The cutscenes take place in small areas and run well, since the level of details is purposefully limited.
This has people coming out of the benchmark with 60-70FPS average scores even though the actual gameplay part runs at 40FPS.

It just feels really scummy.

Does the game still take place in 1403? Because the supposed guy that Henry fucks, Hans Capon, would be 15 seeing as how he was born in 1388.

One just has to look at the times when a dev gets famous enough that he strikes out on his own, without any execs holding his leash.

Overbudget, over time and overpromised, every time.

And this pattern has existed since the 90s. Literally since dev fame became possible in the first place.

It's popular to hate the execs. Whether it's games, movies, TV, even print media.

But without someone to say "Hol' up. We want to make some money here. Stay with the plan, don't feature creep, kthxbye" shit invariably goes wrong.

Execs can fuck up, no question about that.

But so can anyone.

And a good exec can just as well save a project. Star Wars was fucking forcefed to theaters by 20th Century Fox.

The exec just won't ever get credit for it.

Ah, the Ken Levine Arc.

I still think it's funny that EA current CEO is the only one apparently in all of Bioware that understood that "Iron Man Simulator = Good" during peak Marvel. It explains why Anthem went the way it did. That and they basically had 18 months to make it because they took 5 years of doing... what, exactly?

This is why for the longest time Sony's most important exec level member has been Mark Cerny. He fully understands the nature of that the Design Phase of a Game has to end and the Production Phase has to start. Apparently being one of the few to understand the basic realities of any production.

That's the other rub with game development. The lack of experienced Producers. It's not like Movies. A Game Producer has maybe 4 major productions in an entire career and they can't double-dip at the same time.

Bungie was a big wake up call for me. Microsoft and Activision were holding them back in terms only in terms of their ability to fuck over their customers.

The worst of the Microsoft Execs managed to leave with Bungie and eventually take over, after pushing out every founder of the company. Funny, that.

Arkane's problem has always been horrific marketing. They've never marketed one game so you knew what it was before you looked to pick it up. If they can solve that problem, they'll have a chance.

That sounds about right, unfortunately.

Tbf Minecraft have been receiving a lot of updates over the years and it is no longer the same game as it once was
Like this is pretty much retro for all intent and purpose.
I started playing Minecraft back around the middle of Infdev and I can agree that there's definitely nostalgia for older versions of it. There's even modpacks that are out there that aim to add to Indev/Alpha/Beta (because modern minecraft is bloated with dumb shit). I think the one I've heard about the most is "Better Than Adventure" where it basically just cuts the majority of everything added with the Adventure update onward (no enchantments, no sprinting, no hunger are some things they removed off the top of my head) and adding new shit that would fit to Beta 1.7.3.

I mean, the EA executive who infamously talked about charging people for reloading their magazines managed to get on at Unity and helped tank that too. I'm not optimistic that the devs and executives who have fucked the gaming industry up won't just end up getting hired in enterprise solutions and ruining the software I use for work or something. HR departments eat this DEI shit up for hiring, and absolutely nothing has happened that will change that tendency.
I'm not sure you can call a '58 born, '81 Berkeley graduate guy with the pastiest skin this side of the Appalachians, who got into the games industry in '97 a "DEI Hire".

He's as old school as it gets.

He is the anti DEI.

He is the savior that gamers are yearning for.

I eagerly await for the dev cycle of a live service game to line up with someone's "transition" the meme will be legendary. bonus points if we somehow get monthly images of the creatures face so we can make a timeline of how doomed the game was at the time.

come on EA make it happen.
