I would add that in my experience European Conventions are much less degen than american ones just by limitations of the locations. They don't take place in Hotels, that offers private rooms all around to jump from the con to the cosplay orgies in mere minutes. Not that they don't happen at all, but it's much less in your face because of the separation between convention location and the place people sleep at.

Yeah, it's the hotel part of the convention centers that attracts a lot of the issues. And Anime Cons in the States got really bad when the freaky types started to show up. Much like with Comic conventions, once the "are they a cosplayer or more of a high priced whore?" effect kicked in, it really becomes very different things to different groups. Conventions act like proto-swingers clubs, is about the best way to put it.

I also was informed Ren Faires tend to do the same thing. I never quite got why there was always so many conventions when I was younger, until the pseudo sex club stuff was pointed out to me. Now, it makes sense. Which is also why it then attracts the neck beards.
