Proliferation. My Gen Y ass grew up part when the Internet may as well not have existed, and part when it was just getting into the public eye. Back then, it was mainly that thing those nerds were using, for their boring nerd stuff. Outside of that, some started using it for email, and... that's basically it. Maybe research for their homework, but then it was more likely they'd use some version of Microsoft Encarta.
When you got to the mid-2000s, its utilization was still relatively low amongst the general public, though more and more things were opening up to them - MP3s, instant messaging, finding out about concert dates, etc. Still, most were just using cellphones, and using them as cellphones but also with text.
It wasn't until the late-2000s with the introduction of the iPhone did the Internet becoming all-encompassing. What was once a nerd arena from the 90s, then became a minor societal addition in the early to mid-2000s, now became something ubiquitous in society. Fast forward only a few more years, and now it's an absolute necessity.
It can not ever be overstated how much this has changed society, and how rapidly. What the 90s were like and what the 2010s were like may as well be two different realities. I think this is one aspect why a good chunk of my generation has gone insane.
Those teens today, they grew up with the Internet being everywhere and everything. When something is so prevalent, you don't have so much in the way of caution, as you lack a frame of reference. Vast majority of people today would simply die if the power went out and the water stopped working. Not that long ago, people would see it as an inconvenience, and be able to find food and water with little effort - and they would know that they needed to know. If a bank were to shut down and you lost your money in it, that would suck, but at least you'd still have the money you had on you and at home. Now, it'd be all gone, and you'd have no idea what to do about anything.
With the Internet being omnipresent, they have no respect for the intricacies, and thus how it impacts life outside of it.
