100 years ago, it was entirely natural for you to barely even know that a major war/genocide/whatever was happening on the other end of the world. Maybe you'd read about it in a local paper, almost certainly it wouldn't be on the front page.
50 years ago, you'd hear about it in a scripted tv-news broadcast.
Today, even if you take a careful effort to avoid it, this shit gets blasted into your brain from a myriad of sources, and a lot of people genuinely expect you to have a detailed and passionate opinion on it.
