The main thing I believe most are missing is that HololiveEN launched both during COVID and during one of the peak Youtube ad revenue generations periods. Gura's VODs probably funded all of Cover's costs in 2021. That's one of the real problems any new Vtuber agency faces. There's just less revenue in Views. Its about conversions to merch.

Now, maybe don't go the full Coffeeman Route that Sakana did, but he had the absolutely correct idea. Your streams need incentives to stream and merch to sell. That's the Internet Business. The way you make money is either as Infrastructure or selling T-shirts. It's been this way since the DotCom bubble popped in 2001.

It's always baffled me how much people can run on merch. Do they really sell that much? I guess so. It's probably the same for bands on tour.

Apparently Nickleback's concert merch is worth over a billion over the course of the band's career. There's some stupid money in merch if you have an IP that people want to be invested in.

Oh yeah, George Lucas still made more from toy sales of Star Wars than he did for selling LucasArts for 4 billion.

Ad revenue was absurdly low during lockdown since event cancellations and unexpected delays meant advertisers had basically nothing to advertise; YouTubers were earning significantly less per 1000 views during that period than both before and since COVID. Myth brought in more viewership than ever before because more people were dicking around online than doing shit irl, but that was primarily funded through superchats/memberships/merchandising, not ad revenue.

It occurs to me that both Niji and Cover have had recent investor meetings where Yagoo/Riku were talking up merch, saying it was the way forward and that they were specifically taking further steps to grow merchandising (the Holo office in the US comes to mind). All of the big players left in the sphere are playing the merch game now, it's about how well they manage the customer base and IP they've got at this point.

You hear that Fishman? Get your damn logistics figured out. Pay Airi to do it and get her out of Cali for fucks sake. :fishfry:

Gura debuted in September, and Google ad revenue had already started to bounce back from the 2020 Q2 slump at that point. The drop you're thinking of only really lasted for the very beginning of the pandemic response, after that things exploded for a bit and youtubers made a shit-ton of money.

So Chio either doesn't plan on leaving or is keeping the collapse under wraps in which case I question why she brought it up as a side project in the first place

Interesting, considering Chio just had a zatsu a while ago and was in good spirits. She did kind of address the situation (starting from 1:10:49 if the timestamp doesn't work):

"I know there's a lot of people who are worried right now, but I wanted to say that I have always, always, always loved my time in Pixel, that has not changed. I hope people still know that. I hope people still know that Pixel is awesome, you know, even if we still have some things happen, that does not mean Pixel has stopped being awesome, you know. I hope people know that we all still love being here, that has not changed."

"I can't say a lot right now, because you know, we're not ready to, yeah, but I just wanted everyone to know, because I know that a lot of people have been worried. It's nothing like the company being bad to us or anything. Everyone here has still been awesome, it has always been awesome, and I hope people know that, I just hope people know that. That's all I wanted to say."

"Right now, there's like some uncertainty, and I know I've been a bit worried too, but I just want people to know that it's nothing like that if that's what they're thinking. Pixel has always been great to us, and they still are."

Considering Chio was dooming the hardest, it's a big deal that it's coming from her. She was also openly on /vt/ in her PL, so she knows what kind of rrats get brought up in times like these.

I get the sense this is not necessarily an imminent collapse, but there will be some changes happening in the coming year that are introducing a lot of question marks for the talents. Whatever it was, it caused them to panic, and they probably realized they overreacted so they all dialed back the alt-posting and privated them in some cases (Miuna, Wisu, Daiya, etc.). It's just Chio and Lottie now who are actively trying to be found.

No reason to dump Chio (or start using both) until PixelLink is dead, so not wrong off her to say that it's only a side project right now.

I was just about to link this. 🕰️ avoided.

I think the most important part is what she said right after what you quoted. The way she says it, it sounds like the company is prepping to make an announcement about whatever is going on.

Even if it was an overreaction, it had to be something really serious to make them all freak out like that.

Wisu mentioned a little bit of the collab cancelation, in a membership stream. She is very happy and lovey-dovey with the wisumites so at least she is fine. Thanking the wisumites a lot for the help she got with her dog's health problems. She only mentions that “Is internal, and I can't talk about it” and that she expects us that we support the girls no matter what and that she can see us every time she streams. The stream is extremely wholesome, to be honest.

An out-of-nowhere(for the talents) Brave purchase is actually a decent fit to the shitshow we've observed over the last few days.

Initial massive freak-out, followed by things slowly calming down instead of escalating further as the situation becomes more clear for the girls and they find that it's not actually the end of the world.

We'll see if they start talking about w\e happened more openly, but clearly some of the tension was aleviated after initial news broke.

Seeing that situation did not develop yet, i would say business is bad and there were talks about selling or closing, but it's not decided yet. Hell, they might even silently shut down corpo without killing PixelLink brand, easy.

I'm not convinced a Brave purchase would explain the event cancellations, desu.

Just popped up in my timeline, followed by a lot of vtubers including Chio alt.

It seems to be Maria Paradisia's account, rebranded. Replies to her can be found and she mentioned becoming a red panda

The silver lining is that I really wasn't a fan of the Kanna model, but I'll miss her "qua's". Hope she doesn't go dark for 3-4 months again like last time. That said, as much as I disliked Kanna's model, this feels like a monkey's paw moment, because losing Lottie's model would be a travesty.
Yeah
E2: Yeah, that's Daiya
Seriously? I follow her, and somehow had no idea.
Didn't Sakana establish earlier this year that yeah, those are the prices any decent artist/rigger will be asking for their work without any kind of discounts present?
A $20’000 model had better not be merely “decent”; that is very high-end. VERY high-end.
