That's for the story, but you can't just pretend masks stop mustard gas which is just a bleach vapor basically and it will saturate into clothing as well as any exposed skin to cause extreme chemical burns. It's why gas masks weren't effective against, but they would stop you from drowning in your own blood and puss.
