Rorschach is great because he has his ideals and sticks to them, which can lead to worse outcomes for him, but he'd be true to himself than to simply do what's best for his survival in the situation. It's like the rifle song, people want to be free.

Having moral principles and a sense of justice is one thing, but having them so unbending, so self-evident and the belief they are completely objective and absolute means that it is morally just to remove the people who violate them from society and there is practically no chance for atonement.
