On one hand, Glock 17 can be bought for about $700 though you might have to buy it in parts and assemble it, on the other hand I don't trust you with a gun.

I mean, thats why you shoot multiple times. You can stop people with 9mm or a 38, but if you want to pay extra for a .45 or a .357 feel free. I almost bought a USP .45 once, but they have really shot up in price (like most everything)
Hollow points with a 17 round magazine will stop most things and hollow points give you the added justification that both the feds use them and you were shooting to kill because you feared for your life. You can get a revolver or something, though you can have a 9mm handgun and something like an older .855 AR.
