The devs have always had scumminess to them, but it was largely exclusive to the japanese releases. Now that the series is more popular and getting simultaneous releases, everyone deals with the shit they pull. Plus now they have shit like western streamers as dlc in their games. Everything goes to shit eventually

Unironically, if GameFreak made their own version of PixelMon - but with Pokémon’s actual art style, and it actually runs well - while feeding it constant updates through the generations (fueled by full-fledged expansion packs to minimize potential micro transactions)
