Fraps is a wonderful piece of software that only records footage at lossless quality, filling your entire hard drive in just a few minutes.

I remember making WoW PvP videos and it would capture segments at random as it pleased. I'm guessing there was some hotkey to stop and start recording I wasn't aware of that kept cutting it in and out during gameplay.
