Could even be that they were told the kids died and they were paid a settlement for the tragedy. One of the notes on the house door indicated four people in the unit, so it's unlikely there were four random kids and not a family in there.

Not sure what the timeline was like, but the death certificate showed three months and she was told to stop calling while they were still locked in the apartment, which Ashley assumed was because they were dead.
