Madtv was the far superior show to SNL.

I don't know about far superior but SNL quickly became dog shit, specifically after Norm Macdonald left. So not exactly a high bar either.

MadTV was fairly consistent in quality. SNL kind of since its inception has always been shit most of the time, its just that they'd once in awhile have an amazing sketch that manifested out of thin air. A lot of the time it had to depend on the guest stars like Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin or Christopher Walkin. Or minor bit players like Norm Macdonald or Adam Sandler. A lot of the primary crew, even the original cast weren't really able to push most of the sketches over the edge.

I'd recognize the consistency, but it was very much a 6 to 7 out of 10 level of quality. Only their reoccurring characters like Ms. Swan or Stewart are worth remembering for the most part.

Madtv wasn't afraid to actually put out controversial skits. SNL always played it safe with the exception of Norm and some of the early people who became the Upright Citizens Brigade and the like. They all knew SNL wasn't great and moved on to their own projects obviously.
