I think he was based on Mansa Musa, King of Mali during the Middle Ages which the relatively same period as the game. However most his activities are in Africa and the most interaction between him and Europe is that Musa caused a gold inflation in Cairo due to him giving it away there and that caused some European kings to be interested in Africa and might be the influence of Portugal to establish trading posts and later colonies during the 16th century. And if what I read about the game it takes place during 1403 but Musa dies on 1337.
