My oshi is and has always been indie. I started watching at least two/three holos because I enjoyed their indie vtubing, and there are other vtubers I knew as IRL idols etc. first.
Good managers and support staff more than pull their weight, some corps are worth it, but it's not a symmetric relationship - the talents are essential, everyone else is nice to have. Honestly while some kind of talent management is beneficial when you get big enough, it's an accident of history that idol style agencies caught on and became seen as the main way to do vtubing - the Mythic model where individual streamers share a management agency but don't form a coherent project works equally well for most purposes. Of course some people like the idol style, but it's not the only way to do vtubing.

I'm not sure if it was being plump, being a hag or something else, but some kids did say unkind things about her under the assumption she wouldn't be able to understand it when she was in her favourite food place she had fond memories of during her last visit to Japan. It left some emotional damage, but I wouldn't classify it as a meltdown.
