It's great because they believed in what they were making. The gameplay is great, the story is good but what makes it perfect is the delivery. The emo-grunge heritage lived in this game and went so hard it makes you care because it's so absurd it feels like a teenager angst fever dream. I think the oppressive atmosphere that exists isn't unique to Cover and is really just the usual Japanese corporate climate sucking the air out of the room and chilling expression, but "just the usual" isn't meant to be a handwave; Jap corporate culture is quite bleak. To Yagoo's credit, if anything, I think Cover may actually be somewhat lax in this regard, although you can only ablate so much, especially with investors involved.
