I feel like the simple answer to the response to the "b-but Haachama" response whenever this topic comes up is that she was brought on by HoloLive early enough in this industry that we hadn't yet figured out that it's best to keep minors as far away from this as possible. Note that neither HoloLive nor the other big agencies have been falling over themselves to repeat that experiment since then.

At any rate, the agency took down the original announcement tweets for the talent and put up this one. Tldr: the talent will be making content with her "babysitter" who will be the primary character on the channel and the content will be available only on YouTube Kids. I think this means the content will all be pre-recorded videos rather than streams because I don't think YT Kids allows for livestreams, right? If that's the case then good on the agency for quickly realizing the fuckup and figuring out how to fix it appropriately rather than doubling and tripling down into oblivion like AkioAIR.

Japanese corporations see no issue hiring minors for either the idol or vtuber industry. A whole ton of vtubers started streaming as minors. It's one of the most common 'admissions' I've heard behind the scenes in the industry. Is your oshi currently early 20's? Yeah, she was probably already streaming at 16 or 17 and already applying to corporations by then. I don't like it at all, but it's totally normalised within the industry. Hell, nobody ever bothered asking me what age I was when I started joining random IRC chats nearly 20 years ago, or how old I was when I was playing online D&D 15 years ago. I know we like to rag on places like AkioAIR for openly stating they hired a minor and acting like it wasn't an issue... but that's because it really wasn't (within the industry). They just underestimated how hard the backlash against admitting it publicly to the international market would be.

It's normal in Japan because sexualising minors in general is normal in Japan. They have junior idols modelling swimsuits in magazines for grown men, they have thirteen-year-olds in idol groups wearing the same skimpy outfits as the twenty-year-olds in music videos that get played on TV. They have enough plausible deniability to get away with it because they're marketing them as "cute" rather than "hot", but we can all see what's happening, and it's grossly exploitative.

When Britney Spears was in that music video wearing a "sexy schoolgirl" outfit at 16 it got a lot of backlash with some media outlets at the time straight-up comparing it to child pornography, even in countries like the UK where she'd have been of legal age - but it'd be business as normal over there, even with girls who're considerably younger. As an open idolfag it's something that makes me really uncomfortable, because there is literally no way an underage girl can fully understand the implications of putting themselves out there like that. It feels like the production companies are exploiting a loophole in the age of consent to make it happen; "we can't let people fuck them, but we can still profit from people wanting to fuck them".

I've talked about this before but I think we need to aggressively shun attempts to import this culture into Western vtubing every time it pops up since there's too much crossover with sexual material for it to be safe. Even the most wholesome vtubers and their audiences are just one or two degrees of separation from e-whores who masturbate in members-only streams for viewer gratification; minors should be kept a safe distance away from that at all times, which is literally impossible when they're in talent agencies who have working relationships with each other.

Never allow children a direct line of access to anonymous masses, infinitely more so if they're girls. If they've a talent for performing to some degree and want to make pre-recorded skits and the like that they don't need to interface with the audience to produce, fine, go for it, but no audience-to-performer contact without heavily filtering it for fucking scum first.

Once they're legal majority it's whatever, they're legal adults that can start learning to sort that shit themselves. Still though, how entertaining would an actual child vtuber really be in live streaming? If they have a strong commentary game then fine enough but there's no shot a 9 year old has anything going on in their life that is worth talking about that I at over 4x that age will be interested to hear. They barely have started developing their personality and will have hardly any life experience, compare against, say, Randon who I could listen ramble about a fucking ball of sticky cling film melting in his car and be enthralled.

I completely agree with the first part of the post. So for the other part, could a child make for genuinely entertaining content? I don't think it's entirely outlandish - I'm sure most of us enjoy spending time with children of friends and relatives. Presumably the child in question is friendly, polite, behaves well and so forth, which goes a long way into making a child likeable. As for the actual content, I think some people would genuinely like to see a kid react to their favourite games or TV shows from the eighties or nineties. And while you're right that there's not much a nine-year-old can say by themselves that's interesting, seeing how different talents behave and act while chatting with a child might make for fun content too.

I'll agree with the other posts that it's probably better to just concentrate on making entertaining content using adults. But maybe with enough planning, effort and gatekeeping you might be able to make entertaining content involving a kid that doesn't jeopardize the safety or wellbeing of that kid.
