Suicide is primarily a disorder of Cortisol regulation and the inability for the mind to remove a negative thought. What causes suicides, in most cases, is actually the thought itself stuck in a person's mind. Think Autistic Fixation on trying to end yourself. As the cycles go through, the stress response increases. As much as it seems cliched, in a lot of cases it is actually "cry for help".
The problem with discussions about the topic is that suicides are common enough that they're also a pretty negative emotional trigger for any audience. This leads to only the most pathologically insidious or mealy-mouthed discussing the issue normally. Which is an issue, as every society has a completely predictable suicide rate. It's actually quite stable in societies, which is why when it does change you need to start asking a lot of questions.
The introduction of cereal grains has killed off a massive amount of older generations in a society when its introduced. That's how you end up down the chain of cortisol regulation. The talk about South Korea's suicide rate always misses that it's those over 60 killing themselves as an insane rate. High protein grains when you never grew up with them will drive people pretty crazy, and suicide is just one of the outlets.
Its why if you have a person in your life that you know is struggling, getting them out with physical activity and removing all carbs from their diet for a month will generally address the issue. Though there's bound to be a lot of other damage that needs to be addressed, but that's generally a very important part of the triage: low stress, low carbs.
