Most of pokemon popularity doesnt even come from the game themselves anyway, it's their push on alternative medias like anime, manga, etc. I bet they sell ten times the merches than they sell games.
The real reason why Pokemon is popular and people will eat it up is because there's not much to play on the switch and it's a good time waster, basically justifying their handheld purchase. If people bought a switch they will play pokemon whether it's good or not.
Same reason why people play gacha games for years, it fits into the mobile device, a good time waster despite none of them being actually good.
