There's some affectations that aren't that hard to hit and maintain permanently so long as you can remember how/when to hold it, and can be achieved more by position of tongue or how you shape your mouth rather than how much you're constricting your throat. I think their natural voices are already pretty close to their performance voices and it's only a slight change they're making that is no strain at all on them to maintain, but still doesn't have a proper natural voice sound to it.

Hard to really say what it is without an actual 100% non-performance example to compare against though.
