Considering he was in NijiEN for less than 2 years and accumulated hundreds of thousands in tax debt, he was making a lot of money.
I would guess he bought something in a country/rural region close to the city, as it's cheaper to get a house in these parts, wait 10 years until the land gets developed by bigger investors or even the government, and live peacefully there.
The tax thing is that if you fuck up, you need to pay fines over your taxes, and if you had undue taxes (for example his first explosive year) it's worse, it's not just a single thing. I'd suppose all the assets his mother had were moved to his name for "being more easy to manage" (rookie's mistake).
I'm not versed in UK laws, but you can fuck up your taxes in many ways and the IRS will try to get every extra penny they can.
