Nerfing Marine? Absolutely unacceptable, I will now harass him for months as revenge.
I actually haven't played the game in forever, most of my playtime was before it was ever even on steam and that save got lost cause I forgot to back it up but holy shit there's so much fucking content in the game now it's almost overwhelming. Like double the amount of playable characters and HoloHouse didn't even exist at the time.
Even with F2P gacha games my luck is fucking cursed. I think I unlocked outfits for everyone else in Gen 3 before even getting base Marine...
yeah if it's been a hot minute then theres lots to overwhelm.
Just remember none of it is as deep as it looks it's still the same game.
As for unlocks Grabbing a money maker first is essential Marine is a good choice she's straight up more powerful then the other options i think and she makes nearly the same unless your trying to break your income.
Theres also Irys Mumei Fauna (big draw being in the same gen so you can go for all 3 at once) Pekora Reine Risu basically anyone that hit's enemies more then once also works
There's also Anyone who is strong enough to clear Halu waves for a nice bonus profit.
Run stage 1 (or any stage you can easily complete) Greed Stamp + Super Chatto Time + Personal coin making skills.
come back with enough for like 1-3 10 rolls to whoever you want. also grab the exp and coin upgrades in the shop while your there.
doing that once or twice will give you enough cash to pick up what you want.
After slamming away at all the other grinds in the game, finally decided to clear all the stages with Coco. Stage 5 was pretty rough because the spawn rate was fucking nuts. Stage 4 Hard mode is extremely fucking gay for that first five minutes. It's just not enough movement speed at the start to avoid all the lightning strikes and not enough HP regen to ignore it, just constantly teetered on low HP for those first couple minutes trying to scramble to get my build together. Really doesn't help that Coco is on the low end of base speed at 1.3 while her self healing requires 1 specific item to appear.

Apparently, A-Life is broken and is in the game, but has a really short cutoff distance or something. Unsurprisingly, the game is broken on release.
I don't buy that at all. You can reload a save next to a group of NPCs that aren't pre-placed, and they'll either be different NPCs every time, or just not spawn on some reloads. That's not buggily simulating groups, that's just a random encounter spawner.
Or, the evil option, A-life 2.0 is actually just a random spawning system by intention, like they stated in this interview.

because everyone saw how well FC3 did and went I WANT THAT and now we get to suffer through shittily made open worlds and towers that magically reveal the map for you (ok that was AC's fault but still) FC4 arguably being just as popular or even more so and even today being worth talking about just cemented the trend.
Also Nintendo being years late to a trend is something you can set a calendar to I think games are moving away from it at breakneck speed outside of stuff directly published by Ubisoft anyway.

"Kinki Spiritual Affairs Bureau" (Kinki means Taboo in Japanese, I think.) It appears to be a game about shooting ghosts with guns using Final Fantasy 7 style graphics. She was so happy when she finished that she started clapping, she thought it was a good game.

I feel like the later games are very normie-coded (which is probably why they sold so well compared to 1 and 2) - they have some aspects that I like but they're not that memorable for me, outside of the outpost mechanics and some of the voice acting. Blood Dragon was legit great though and doesn't overstay its welcome.

Gaming Thoughts and Reconsiderations
Been playing some Unreal Tournament and Unreal Tournament 2004 with bots, and my long held thoughts are reaffirmed: 2k4 not as good as UT. I now recall why Unreal Tournament 2003 was so looked down upon, and UT2k4 was so well regarded: vehicles. UT2k4 became a sort of Tribes/Halo hybrid with vehicles on the Onslaught maps. UT2k3 lacked this, and the only thing people fondly recall of it was the Bombing Run gamemode. 2k4, being an upgrade from 2k3, retains a lot of the same aspects.
However, comparing both to the original UT, they are lackluster is key areas. While 2k3/4 are higher fidelity in polygons and textures (because of course), the actual art direction is less consistent, duller, and flatter, and lacks the character of UT, or really, character altogether. All the weapons look weaker, sound weaker, and feel weaker. Game lacks OOMPF.
There were some other fine-but-not-great FPS games at the time, like Serious Sam 2, that suffered from this same problem. I'm not sure why this is. Perhaps it's yet another example of the focus to make games for consoles first and PC second, which became the norm once the PS2 blew up and Halo on the Xbox showed there was a large market there. This notably fucked up other PC-centric titles at the time, like Deus Ex: Invisible War and Thief: Deadly Shadows.
This really leaves a long dryspell from the likes of Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein until Team Fortress 2, the last great multiplayer FPS - and even that was a tempered version of Team Fortress Classic (which was a tempered version of QuakeWorld Team Fortress).
