I've seen the start of Skynet - my computer refuses to run Civilization V and I can't figure out how to fix it.

To fill the Civilization V-shaped hole in my heart, I'm after similar game suggestions:
  • 4X strategy game with multiple paths to victory besides killing the enemy
  • Turn-based is a must.
  • I don't want to play a fantasy or sci-fi setting. I'd love a game with the historical scope of Civ, but will take a more narrowly-focused setting if required
  • Would prefer lots of factions to choose from, although this isn't required
  • Some nice graphics wouldn't go astray
I'm not interested in recommendations for other Civ games, obviously. So, what games are best to scratch that Civilization itch?
Based Civ V enjoyer. Can I just say how much I fucking despise Civ VI? and now Civ VII which is just a gayer version of humankind, another shitty game.

The thing I hate the most about Humankind is the narrator - extremely annoying, repeats the same lines of dialog whenever you start a new game (because you're learning the specific mechanics of the new game), and you can't turn it off. No, I don't want your lazy Buffy-style quips in my 4x strategy game, fuck off.

I also don't like that I'm losing combats I feel like I should have won, even when I'm playing normal mode, have the same amount of combatants, am going up against enemies of the same type and I have been selecting options to improve my combatant's prowess. Shit's fucked.

I got Humankind at some point from a bundle, I think. Never played it because anytime I hear about it, I hear how boring and disappointing it is, so I never care to even install it and check it out. Kind of a shame to hear it's not good considering it's from Amplitude, who are behind the Endless games. Hoping they'll come out with a newer game in that series and not fuck it up. Really enjoy Endless Space 2.

As much as I'd like to play different 4X games, it's pretty hard for me to play all that much because as much as I love the genre, I can really only play them when I'm in the mood and I'm willing to sit down for an extended period of time to play them. So, I tend to be pretty picky with them. I played Civ 6 for a little, but there were things about it I didn't like, so I dropped it and went back to 5. Right now Old World is the one I mainly play, but I still have Civ 5, Endless Space 2, and Age of Wonders 4 installed in case I'm in the mood for them, and even then, it's been quite a while since I've played those three. Hell, it's been a few months since I've played Old World too. There have been some others that I thought were fun, but didn't really stick with me much.

Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmares makes their return in half a day, surely Rockstar will realize that Undead Nightmares 2 is a good idea, once people start seriously playing it again, streaming it, modding it, right?

In the mean time, Red Dead Online (in RDR2) is having their own Halloween event, including three new telegram missions...which is probably the most content the game received all year! I wish they didn't give it to a skeleton crew when it didn't make a zillion dollars per year like GTAO! It's not like any other studio will make their own cowboy games with online multiplayer, that would require taking risk and making new product, when investors could just demand re-making and re-releasing old product instead!

Yes, I'm salty, how did you know?

I don't agree with Skill Up at all regarding the companion quests. Having them outside the confines of the main quest often are better at demonstrating who the characters are, that they have lives outside the mission and can also be used for world building in areas that are missed in the main story. This was done very well in ME1 and was the crux of ME 2. Hell, I was way more engaged in that aspect of the ME games and Dragon Age over BG3's method, if that is what BG3 did (honestly the other problem is caring about the characters and I didn't care about anyone in BG3). It comes down to execution I suppose but DAV would still be shit if they were integrated more with the main story.
I didn't have a problem with mainlining companion quests as part of the main story progression in BG3 except for Shadowheart. The whole secret point system over whether you can convince her not to murder the Nightsong is really annoying because it requires you to devote time to Shadowheart so she doesn't kill the Nightsong. If you didn't pay much attention to Shadowheart in your first playthrough, you're now either stuck with a dead Nightsong or a dead Shadowheart. If you're on a repeat playthrough, you have to take the time to devote time to her all over again even if you're already done all her content in prior playthroughs just so you can convince her if you want to keep her in your party while still doing stuff with the Nightsong around.

Even the Minthara vs Halsin conflict is easily alleviated by knocking out Minthara non-lethally when you kill the other 2 goblin leaders, as she'll show up in Act 2 and you can recruit her there. The Shadowheart companion questline is just a bitch because it's an unavoidable part of the main questline and you can't just ignore it, it comes to a head no matter what you do. At least when the other companion questlines have a major plot moment as part of the main story progression, it doesn't turbo cuck you by forcing you to decide between which character to lose.

atleast the Mass Effect Trilogy and Kotor duology are perfectly servicable

For all the praise it gets, the combat gameplay in ME2 is laughably jank. At least they finally got it in the right direction for ME3. It was always baffling to me how bioware handled that game. "You didn't like the Mako? here you go, we removed all planetary roaming!" "Inventory system was a drag? here you go fellas, no more inventory! or items, or equipment, or even buying and selling weapons!"
I sure am glad nobody complained about Mass Effect being in color, or having music.

Don't tell anyone in 2012 that The Old Republic was gonna end up one of Bioware's better games.
:dokiSmug:

Also Bioware didn't make KOTOR2, it was Obsidian, a different studio painfully past their prime, clinging on to people who remember them making good games 15 years ago, so I can see why people would confuse the two.

is this more NOOO DONT KEEL MUH COMPANIONS? or is there a legit reason to keep shadowheart around Shar can eat several dicks and your trying to switch the alignment of a devout cleric.

the one complaint i would throw out there is from what i can tell Nightsong does not replace Shadowheart if you "fail" (yes ive not actually gotten around to BG3 yet played a bit but waiting for people to shut up about it so i can enjoy it)

Ended up playing maybe 10 matches of Black Ops 6's multiplayer before uninstalling, this shit fucking blows. Which is fucking upsetting, because MW3's multiplayer is very fun, but everyone will move to BO6 regardless of quality.

The maps are mostly too big, and made in the MW2019 style of being absolute swiss cheese and forcing you to check 900 angles at once whenever you hit a corner. The spawns are more awful than usual, if you're playing dom you can find an angle and just shoot into the enemy spawn, and as long as you don't get too close or cap their point the spawns won't flip. The guns feel awful to use in general, but there's also something just wrong with the game because you'll get 5-7 hitmarkers on a guy, and he'll kill you with the exact same gun, and the death recap will say he bodyshot you three times. The movement is still painfully slow unless you're just spamming dolphin dives. And finally, this shit took four fucking years to make and you have like 30 guns total, and they're all painfully samey? Really nigga? Three snipers, two bolt actions and a semi? No semi auto 50 cal? Five different 5.56 ARs, the FALbomination, and no AKM? No G3? No fucking M16? No SPAS-12? No MP5K? Don't even get me started on them gutting the weapon customization. All the guns have mostly identical attachments, and you can't really nigrig guns into different guns anymore. Game set in the 90s, and you can't make an MP5SD because the MP5 only gets retarded barrel options.

I fucking hate it man.

Yes, there's that whole thing with The House of Grief. Then there's the staff you get that gives advantage on Wisdom saving throws, which are super common. Then again, I now realized you can probably just cheese this whole process by making sure the Spear of Night isn't in your party's inventory when you get to the Shadowfell, so she can't kill the Nightsong.

Then again, if you kill the Nightsong, you get way better gear but in return, a FUCK TON of valuable NPCs die.

I wanted to try out Ara History Untold but got sidetracked by Metaphor and Romancing SaGa. Old World was decent from what I remember, but it's never going to top Civ IV and V.

According to a note on the Japanese official website, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is based on the western version of Xenoblade Chronicles X.

XenoGODS keep winning. The only loss I'm seeing from this though is that it's specifically the western (censored) release.

It's more so to do with the fact that Lin had censored bikini outfits iirc.

Edit: additional censorship I was made aware of was the fact they removed the titty-slider for Elma (The protag btw) and the Fundoshi.
There were name changes in EN too. Specifically scrubbing religious themes and name changes like Dolls to Skrells. I would think at least these would be potentially reverted.

They got rid of the potato faces but... oh my God, THEY MADE ELMA SLIGHTLY LESS BROWN.

Red Dead Redemption 1 and Undead Nightmare has finally hit Steam, but lacks multiplayer and is rather pricey for an old game. Other than that, it appears to be a solid port, at least we didn't get another Definitive Edition scenario.

Anyone here finished (or gotten decently far in) Metaphor? Is it as banging as everyone is saying?

I want to get through P3R, which conveniently just stopped starting on my PC with no error message at all, before I start with Metaphor. But everybody's saying it's peak so I'm wavering, especially with the aforementioned P3R issues. Although, not going to lie, the revelation that you can't fuck your companions dampened the excitement somewhat, as retarded as that sounds.
