I remember, when young, learning about public executions and some of the rather weird political fights supposedly about religion during the pre-Westphalia period. I thought it strange to have that much zeal for something that I always sensed they really didn't actually understand themselves. Come to find out it was more of a problem with historians not being able to handle the intertwining of Power, Religion and Culture. (History nerds are not really the types that actually should be writing histories, but that's a different topic.)

As an adult with better insight, a lot was lost. "Hang your Warlocks and burn your Witches." You either eliminate the anti-social aspects from your society or they'll consume you and require more harsh medicine. We're leaving the FA part and getting close to the FO part in Western Culture.
