this is post doctorate talk. the world is not so complex that you can't say countries are unimportant. historically, subsahara africa is unimportant. But since theres a glut of phd students, we have to research africa. since theres a lot of dissertations on subsahara africa, have to narrow down to genocides. but since there's a glut of genocide papers, have to look at the people and culture of those genocides, all the way down until you get to the lives of mtf vermintide during the rwandan genocide.

and then that becomes pop history and the focal point for 20 years.

the american version of this phenom were the lives of slaves in the civil war. research on the war and its causes were done in full, people moved onto the peasants and slaves, they reseached whatever diaries they could find and that became the focal point.

thanks to phd students we forget the war of the civil war and focus on unimportant people who had no effect on the war. because historians are good for one thing, missing the big picture. most 21st century history papers are slop. you could erase it from bookstores and the internet and you wouldn't miss out on anything important.
