Brief Jelly update, the signing bot wasn't able to be fixed in time, she's not taking it well, support her all you can during this week of streams:

Well, this was an absolute tech mess from beginning to end. For the most part, events at least eventually happened, mostly with plenty of scuff and after significant delays. It's actually astounding how much shit went wrong here. They had better work hard to make sure they get shit figured out by the next one.

However, monetary gains/losses aside, I'm sure it was a net positive for everyone involved in terms of exposure and general satisfaction. Not to tribalfag, but I think this is especially true for Phase. They had a massive presence at this con, and it's clear how many people were there for Phase. Scuff aside, all the talents seemed to have enjoyed it, as well as the people actually there. Those of us at home got the worst of the experience.

I'll try to be nice and hope that the Offkai organizers use this as a learning experience and try to work things out better for next time. A few bumps here and there would have been forgivable, but damn near everything had so many problems that they had to even delay their main concert by an hour and a half into the night. Poor Shiina didn't seem like she could catch a break, but she damn well gave it her all. The talents put so much work into their activities here, and since they're the ones bringing the paying customers to drop ridiculous amounts of money, the least Offkai can do is do better next time.

I've already written an essay, so I'll end it with some of my favorite highlights (most will be Phase related because I'm a Phase shill):

  • Jelly's, Lisa's, and Nina's performances at the live concert were amazing. I know of Nina, but I don't know much about her, but I know how much this performance meant to Jelly and Lisa, and they did amazing. Lisa couldn't even catch herself from crying during one point in a song. I'm incredibly happy for them.
  • Uruka's performance was also amazing. Probably my favorite, actually. I'm beyond happy for her that it went so well after hearing she was having such a hard time with her throat issues earlier this week that it drove her to tears at the end of one of her streams. Her singing was amazing, and I'm always a fan of her violin performances, so that was great.
  • The robot tours, while scuffed as hell, had some fun moments like Pippa being Pippa and the various vtubers interacting with other vtubers on screens (Pippa and Sleepy, Lia and Katta, etc). I also watched Yuko happily buying a Sleepy print and being excited pointing out Pippa merch while in the robot, which was nice given how good of friends they all are.
  • Lumi being Lumi and talking shit during her karaoke segment in that party room.
  • Airi and Tenma talking shit on the sound guy during the concert for fucking around with the sound during Jelly's performance, even leading to Airi getting chat banned.
In the end, Offkai deserves the criticism on how scuffed it was, but honestly, I did enjoy the stuff I was able to watch for the most part. I just hope they're better prepared next time. *Insert totally original "Thank you for coming to my TedTalk" joke here*

I have worked setting up conventions and while I agree that this shit is usually what people should prioritize I can assure you that it's the last thing people work on. Event organizers care more about all the tables having a cover so they look nice than the tech shit you can't see. Basically, they care more about the visual aspect and the presentation and only once people start bitching hard about it do they take steps to fix the issue. Back when I worked at it we would get SONY tv's for free to place all around the convention but these TVs would cause input lag which is a huge no-no with fighting games (and a part of the convention was a fighting game tournament). We got a ton of shit for it. Additionally, one of the VGA display cables fucked up and for one of the setups we just had to use the standard Xbox RGB cable. The quality was kinda shit for that one TV and we also got a ton of shit because of it.

You can expect shit to improve for the next one.

Been watching some of Evanit0's streams. He mentioned having a special WIFI thing and this is why his stream doesn't look like shit. Lopi is around being chaotic and they are walking around with another Vtuber (Stella, not sure who she is)

Edit: Also Pancho's handler is cute as hell

This con had the all too classic issue in most businesses: Tech Infrastructure is always the most important but least visible part, so morons forget about it until it's a problem. It's the reason you have to use former engineers for tech company CEOs. If you don't, they lose the plot. Same situation. This was basically an esports tournament without the tournament and it wasn't treated as such.

"Unban my kouhai from your chat and give her your sound guy's severed testicles for her to hang as a trophy in the background of every stream and we'll call it a deal"

I've heard Tenma enough I can both hear it in here voice and would swear that's an actual quote she's said. haha

Mixing is tough. Live mixing even more so. Live mixing for talent who's not even in the room and you have no control over their equipment, distance from the mic or latency even more so. Live mixing that and creating two separate channels for your live audience and the streaming audience even more so. Doing it almost blind with maybe one rehearsal even more so.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that their sound guy isn't an audio engineer and is, at best judging from all the problems I'm hearing about, a guy who knows how to use a DAW and has a pirated version of Soundforge on his laptop. This isn't something you want to skimp on especially when you're trying to make it a big draw. He obviously wasn't doing his job *exceptionally* well if the problems were so bad that even Airi had to bitch about it. I'm sorry to be mean even after Meemaw asked us not to but if you can't do the job then you can't fucking do the job. Coffee is for closers and all that shit.

This has the hallmarks of ignorance and it make sense. Last year Offkai was this small start up. They had a number of issues then but seemed to have learned from them and improved this year. However their growth brought new problems that have bit them on the ass such Internet bandwith and sound problems. They had this big idea for all these performances, started to wonder who was gonna run it, someone said they knew a guy who had a soundcloud, and they all said "Sure. Why not?"

Yeah, everything about this screamed "semi-competent". They know some of what they're doing, but lack the professional experience or the equipment necessary. Frankly, this was a small venue, a small amount of speakers and single stereo audio stream. Do full sound test, run 2 of the videos you were given to run, set a mix and leave it. You aren't in a >5k capacity arena and you know you're dealing with vocal primary music.

What I would have been most worried about was audio desync since video and/or streaming compared to real human with a live mic. I'm going to guess this what the first time most of them had done anything over a small pub and thought it required more. Also, why were they attempting to move the camera at times?

Rin has felt a bit quiet compared to the other Idol girls during Offkai...

Lumi got her deep pocketed fans. Dang. Phase paid for the entire con trip (and the open bar) on the cutouts alone.

So I guess we didn't get the PC announcement that Lia hinted at? Wonder if it got postponed at the last minute. Hmm.

Yeah it was odd, Rie said they had one more announcement and if Shiina could do the honors, but Shiina just listed the other events that they had planned at the con.

Okay, can we agree the comparisons to Dashcon are a bit hyperbolic? Remember, Dashcon was promoting concerts by bands that had no idea the event existed, had panelists who did show up not get paid, had to literally pass a hat to raise funds during the con so they wouldn't get kicked out by the hotel while some of the accounting turned out to be fishy by those at the top, and so on. Tech issues could be incompetence but what happened with Dashcon was outright malice.
The best parts of dashcon were the "collective sigh" and the tumblrtrannies raising their fingers like they are in the fucking hunger games :SelenHAHAhere:

I wish tumblr had never banned porn so these fucks could've stayed contained and not infected the rest of the internet.

Even outside of OffKai, Uruka does seem to have a really dedicated fanbase, but it definitely showed during OffKai. Good for her, and good for all of them.

Only $250 for Da Michi? And she was last place twice?!
And only 5 for her?!? I know someone's gotta be last in one of these but 5? This world....is rotten. Thankfully we've got people like Animal Friend Part 2 doing the hard work of translating her for the rest of the world. Now if only he'd make the vids not close to an hour long. Based Michiru fans had enough foresight to not cover her up with stickers.

Urufugang did make Please Confirm which imo is one of the best and most heartfelt pieces of fan work I've seen.

They love the trash bear and she's earned it.
