The Giver was about how socialism is a fucking living nightmare.

This made it amazing on release as you had a bunch of teachers who were socialists but were unable to see it showing it being a nightmare, and thus praised the book for showing their ideal civilization - and then a bunch of teachers who were socialists but recognized the book was showing their ideology in a negative light and fought having that book in schools.
