"Every five minutes" is a bit of an exaggeration, although there were usually parts that were that short (like the opening + theme song).
Even our commercial channels space them out far more than this. Maybe a short ad break after fifteen minutes or so.
If I watch sports outside of soccer(football) i'll get ads every couple minutes, sometimes even sooner. Only thing I watch on tv but it's also the worst ads wise.
Most shows also have about 10 to 15 minutes of content and then ads.

Most TV at all time has been shit. Like if I was to point out a couple shows that were genuinely funny I would have Seinfeld and South Park from the 90s. The Simpsons too but even they started to go downhill by the end of the decade
