Pippa's making a good point about adult cartoons, and old school Simpsons were best when Homer was a loveable but well meaning dumbass instead of of a Peter Griffin clone. Also, the guy who made Family Guy (Seth Rogan?) is intolerable, when he showed up on Shark Tank to help some guy with his pitch he wouldn't shut the fuck up and it reminds me of this game.

Has there been an adult oriented animation in the west that wasn't comedy or porn though? I feel like anime actually tries to make some adult shows that fall outside of those.

Just about all adult cartoons in the west seem to be made by angry, hateful, misanthropic cunts who only ever seem to want to depict the worst, most miserable aspects of existence. I know of absolutely no popular/relevant adult cartoons that have any sense of wonder, energy or mystery to them. There's nothing deep or existential, just annoying shit about how miserable everyone is and how much of a fucking moron you are for daring to believe anything could be better than it is.

Maybe that's just me, mind you. Maybe there's a ton of that stuff out there. But it certainly doesn't get much attention.

A lot of this stems from people working on cartoons in the west seeing them as a jumping off point to "real" work in live action, or are just people who couldn't hack it in the live action world and are stuck in animation. These people don't really care about animation and might not even be able to draw at all. There's also the issue that these types actively go against having good animation because it'll distract from their writing, hence why early Simpsons got criticized for the animation being too lively and later seasons are really stiff.

Technically "Arcane" is that as it was not created or animated in Japan.

I watched Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated a few years ago and it was really good. While they kept things child friendly, they did give the characters some personality and background. They also gave the series an actual plot instead of it being solo stand-alone episodes. Later near the end it does get somewhat dark and its implied that one character even gets killed trying to stop the main antagonist from reaching the group.

Watched Dragon Prince (first 2 seasons) about 3 years ago and while there are some things I liked about it, the 3D framrate thing is annoying and the series suffers greatly from "DIVERSITY". It feels forced as fuck

Main issue with "cartoons" is that as someone said, it feels like a stepping stone for creators to move to something else. If not that then either its not taken seriously because its seen as a "kids" thing or it is used to hamfist and preach some shit ideology to the kids.

As such, however, it's sorely lacking in the "people tormented forever in rivers of boiling blood and piss" department.

As for """"adult""" cartoons, I still say they peaked in 1929 (NSFW).

I imagine this discussion occurred very early on, before Cover started reserving trademarks and making promo material. Haachama is Haachama to all the other talents and to fans, but is still Akai Haato on official material and in talent-led event promos (e.g. sports fes, Christmas karaoke relay). Maybe Verver and Dopdop could take that route if they wanted it badly enough. Ver has tried to say that his forename is not pronounced like the first syllable of vermilion, but I haven't watched him enough to see if anyone listened.

I don't care if it's possible or has precedent, but Hex Haywire, Ver Vermillion and Doppio Dropscythe are some peak 13 year old fanfiction energy names and even typing them once makes me feel like even more like a retard. It's impressive how bad they are as I can't even begin to remember the new girls outside of (((Zaion))) because that's all I could retain. It just seems like they designed the gen to be cringe OCs and I could go on a multipage rant sinking ever deeper into autism over word choices and character names. As much as I love Fauna, I still would far more prefer if she'd have been called Ceres because at least it's a name of a deity, Fauna is a taxonomical term and not a fucking name. And for another thing what the fuck even is Hakos Baelz even supposed to be as a name?
