Everyone around me also does this.

The only "bad" part is the mold part. so unless it's covered in spots everywhere you just cut off the mold bit.

for me it's usually bread or cheese. no sense throwing it all out when the rest is perfectly fine.

Guys I'm here to inform you that if you can see visible mold that means the whole thing is growing mold microscopically. This is like saying "I still drink expired milk, I just use a strainer to get the chunks out because the rest is still good".

Milk is a Liquid and so the bacteria would be still in the spoiled milk even if you got the chunks out,

Bread and Cheese are solids and thus you can easily cut out the bad bit. Looks fine Smells fine Tastes fine.

Edit:just to clarify only for bread and cheese. I think Meat and things like Yogurt transmit the bacteria too well to risk it.

I would rather get a little sick than waste a whole loaf just because there is little spot on the back.
Its a trade I am willing to make, its not like I am eating actually harmful amounts of fungus (am I?) (I have never gotten more than a little tummy hort doing this)
Also, asking for a friend, does Toasting bread make the bad go die? Like boiling water to make it clean?
