I'm going to pull a Proctor but be brief and say that America's school systems have failed the majority of millennials and zoomers. There are a multitude of reasons why they've failed and your example is mostly to blame on schools focusing on SAT scores (which mean jack shit to students and only seek to fund schools which they then use to fund their bloated sports budgets) and math teachers teach like what you've said due to that. Also when the classroom is 40 very rowdy students there's very little a teacher and maybe an assistant can do. Very much you sink or swim which is awful because Math is an important skill.

The original French pronunciation is more like "muh-LEH". It doesn't bother me though, it's normal to pronounce things in the style of the language you're speaking. When I say wi-fi in French I pronounce it "wee-FEE".
