The two big problems I have are this - first, that anyone under 18 is being put into a highly-sexualised environment, even if you do everything to say: "this talent is under eighteen. No lewding, please". But the bigger problem is that hiring and using minors, even if intended to be legitimate, tends to attract people and controversies I'd rather not see anywhere near vtubing. We've all seen the shit involving Nickelodeon and Hollywood and so forth. That shit can stay right the fuck away from vtubing, thanks. And saying "no minors" is the easiest way to avoid that stuff. People that want to vtube can wait until they're 18.

I don't mind if Holo did it in the early days when roommates where a bit more respected, but nowadays all new talent gets discovered before they even debut, and some of them get doxed too, it would be highly irresponsible to put a minor in that situation. As for other agencies I don't trust them with minors in any sense.

that reminds me, saw this post yesterday on reddit about someone named scarlett young getting pushed by youtube algo. I assumed they meant this person, who's channel is mostly scrubbed with dead/private socials. I did figure out her twitter just changed handles to ladyramunemusic, and based on who some of her most recent replies are to, I think this might be milky queen? there's a decent number of videos of her singing spanning the last decade, so if anyone has a better ear for that wants to compared them and let me know if I'm way off base here.

I agree, and I think the part to take into account is that vtubing echoing the idol industry as closely as it does means that younger vtubers will essentially fill the same market niche as junior idols, and the junior idol culture is genuinely sickening. It requires employing the concept of plausible deniability in its most extreme form - taking photographs of little girls in their swimsuits technically isn't pornography, and we can't prove the grown men who buy magazines featuring those photos will commit sex crimes, so that part of the industry is able to thrive in plain daylight despite anyone with any basic social awareness being able to see exactly what's happening.

Letting underage girls become vtubers could very easily snowball into the same kind of problem, since unsavoury agencies could frame their role as letting kids play video games and gain acting experience to wash their hands of any responsibility, while generating steady revenue from paedophiles trying to flirt with the talents in superchats. Hell, since vtubers stream in-character and can lean heavily into their kayfabe it's entirely possible casual viewers in the chat might genuinely be unaware the person they are watching is underage and interact inappropriately under the false assumption they're a grown adult, adding another layer to an already murky situation - while giving the actual bad actors another get-out-of-jail card. It's a practice that needs to be aggressively shunned every time someone proposes it, to avoid it becoming an unstoppable trend.

Hey I didnt say I agreed with their antics. I was just stating things that happened and are still happening. Minor trainee/idols are normal in the industry.
Wactor stands out like a sore thumb due to the global nature and "open-ness" of vtubing. But their practices are very normal and in line with the industry, including like you stated Nick, Disney and Hollywood.
