Conversely I’ve heard that the PC term “Native American” is actually insulting to them. They’d rather be called Indians (unrelated to the ones on the Asian continent).

This is true for a lot of them. Realistically, if they do have any direct identity, they'd just prefer to be called that. At some level, either Indian or Native American is as broad a term as African, Asian or European. You've grouped peoples that have spent millennia killing each other into one group and call it useful.
There's one exception, the Seminoles. The reason they're the exception is that you'll know someone is a Seminole about 10 minutes after meeting them. They'll let you know. By 30 minutes, you'll know they are the only Tribe not conquered by the USA. And they'll flex that fact at every opportunity. Which seems odd until you understand history better and realize how massive of a flex that actually is and why they still lord it over every other Tribal group. The Crossfit/Vegan "do you know I?" effect cross all boundaries.
Edit: For non-Americans, one other subtle point that's kind of important. While government abuse has a history, the community relationships between Tribes and the rest of America has normally been pretty decent for a long time. There's actually quite a lot of respect that flows towards the Tribes because anyone with an appreciation of history understands they were running up against people with technology >1000 years more advanced. They were always going to lose, but those warbands were some of the hardest bastards on the planet to ever capture or kill. It's why so much stuff is named after them. Cowards they were not, which matters in the end and a good bit of why they aren't completely obliterated from everything.

I'm happy to be legally recognized as an American Indian just to have the fun slurs. Imagine being white and the best you got is "honky."
