Guys, I think we found one of the worst takes I've ever seen about Anime.

I am so tired of people saying that Frieren is a good show. It sucks. Are people so lost these days that they think a 5 out of 10 show has Breaking Bad levels of writing? Maybe not normies but in the anime world so many meh/10 shows get tons of attention and praise.

How many episodes of that show are just nonsense filler? It had to be like 10-12. I get that not every episode has to drive the plot forward. Shows can be more episodic in nature like Avatar the Last Airbender where some of the most memorable episodes of that show are technically filler. Or an example of anime that does that well is Cowboy Bebop. But in Frieren's case, instead of getting a 3-5 act story with twists and turns, you get "Hey, let's buy red-haired Zenitsu an oversized anime steak for his birthday." Oh and that's another annoying thing about modern anime. Every character is a fucking archetype and not an actual character. It's so lazy. If I see another guy tilt his chin down and push up his glasses in a fight, I am going to lose it.

So we have 10 or so filler episodes in the show. Then you have a completely wasted story arc where they edge you into thinking they are going to add a priest to the party, follow by him just randomly leaving. PUT HIS MAIN QUEST ON THE SAME ROUTE AS THE MAIN CHARACTERS YOU IDIOTS. THIS A MADE UP STORY. YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT. And last, you have a Chuunin exam arc that was so boring that I genuinely fell asleep during it. I think even the writers got bored of it because I believe it was cut short followed by the writers spending a bunch of time trying to teach all of the Japanese learners the word goukaku.

The most frustrating part of this is that there a number of genuinely good possible story arcs to explore and the show just doesn't do it. You have 1,000 year old autism elf who has watched many of her friends die. Is she ever going to show any emotion over any of it? Have these writers met an old person before and seen how distraught they are when they outlive their friends and family? Are we going to see any reaction to her being so emotionally shut off that she completely ignored a guy who was so in love with her that he stayed single for his entire life just for the chance to see her like once in 50 years. Frieren's not going to say, "Hey, I was a real bitch to that guy and I fucked that one up." Are we going to explore that? No? Is this character going to learn things during this show and maybe experience regret over past actions or personal failures?

Are we going to maybe explore how Frieren feels about raising a child who she is going to outlive? Maybe she has some reservations about that... or feelings? Nope. Compare this to a story that did a good job with that exact plot point like Lost Odyssey. You have a character who looks 25 with a son who is like 60.

Is the story actually going to introduce a main antagonist? Nope. You're just going to see a couple of demons, get a really good 15th or 16th episode and then the next 10 or so episodes are going to be an overused story arc in anime that is basically a public service announcement telling Japanese kids to try hard on their exams.

I'll wait for some mouth breather to tell me the show hasn't gotten to it yet and to that I say, bro... this show had 28 episodes. They had plenty of time to do this. This is a TV show, not a Twitch livestream. The content is supposed to be condensed. Do we have to wait for her to get to the demon lords castle before she has any strong feelings about Himmel? That's not how people realistically behave. This shit is so emotionless and forgettable that I actually had to look up the specific reason why they were traveling because I couldn't remember it. This is despite the fact that I had only watched the show a few months ago and despite the fact that this FOMO relationship between Frieren and Himmel is such a common and relatable experience. Like I said, the show has good potential but has terrible execution.

What pisses me off even more is that there are shows like To Your Eternity that do a MUCH better job with the immortality theme that get outshined by praise for shows like Frieren. *Spoilers up to the end of season 2* To Your Eternity has a plot point where a kid saves his crush but in the process of saving her, he gets beaten with an ugly stick. He wins over over anyway but ultimately ends up dying before the relationship gets serious. But that's not the end. Later the main character realizes the whole time that he had the ability to revive his friends which means after the ugly kid dies, he could have been brought back to life the whole time yet the main character only finds that out after it was too late. That's story telling. That makes the audience feel things and have complicated thoughts. Frieren does none of that.

To Your Eternity has tons of mystery instead of telling you most of the important plot points in the first few episodes like Frieren does. Anime needs to stop starting every show out with "In the world of Gaia there was a magical war between the elves and the humans 1000 years ago." Followed by divulging every interesting plot point in the first few minutes. Be like Attack on Titan. Be like Death Note. Those shows tell you nothing and let you learn things as the story progresses. I have no idea why Frieren didn't start at the moment she met Fern. The first 4-5 episodes were a completely boring filler arc that would have been told much better if we learned about the heroes who killed the demon lord through Fern and Frieren's relationship as well as through other characters in the story. Doing it that way keeps me asking questions whereas if if I am told everything at the beginning, I have no questions to ask which makes me bored. I genuinely feel like these writers are just throwing out whatever comes out of their head onto a piece of paper instead of actually outlining and planning their story. Which is crazy because these shows cost millions of dollars to produce.

Tl;dr - Frieren is garbage. Stop giving shows like this so much praise. I'll wait for angry fans to not read my reasoning for why I hate the show, as they expect me to break down exactly why I don't like an entire show in 240 characters, followed by calling me an anime tourist because they are retarded and have horrible taste in shows.

Dude can't read emotions from low emotive characters. Most of his big rant is him asking to see the emotions/what the characters feel, when it is there just not as blatant as it tends to be in most shows.

I really liked this anime, how very foolish of me. Thanks this guy for setting me straight and telling me how I shouldn't like it.

On another note, I looked up aniwave just to see if there happened to be anything new and aniwave.SE came up. I didn't try to log in, but it's an exact copy of the real site except a bit shittier (just numbers and no titles for the episodes for example). Found it odd that commenters there were acting like nothing happened while people are still posting Fs in chat on the official subreddit. Just more bullshit fakery.

I'm mostly liking HiAnime except for the subs. At first it seemed great that you can customise the font and all kinds of style options, but I've found the actual translations to be pretty bad sometimes, and the worst thing is they'll have unimportant background text like shop signs or background conversations mixed up right there in the same lines as the main subs. Absolute lunacy

Oho? What's this? Another LN review 40 trillion years later? Nani the fu- okay I'll fucking stop.

It is me, John Light Novel, your cellmate who diddles your ass at night between reading sessions, coming in for one more round of literary buttfucking (no homo). I wanted to write a review about that one LN with the old dude with the peg leg but I got bored half-way through and then lost my draft so fuck that we doing something else. If you read the last review then you know the drill, I am not reading the fucking manga... ya-da ya-da, let's get on with it.

Today we are witness to:
The Conqueror from a Dying Kingdom (Horobi no Kuni no Seifukusha)
Volumes Read:
Up to Volume 7 (Latest published volume at the time of writing)
Original run:
April 5th, 2020 – Present (Complete publishing re-write, original webnovel still ongoing? I think?)
Author:
Fudeorca
Genre:
Isekai (Political & Historical Fiction, High Fantasy/No Magic, Kingdom Building, Academy, No RPG elements, Wartime Fiction)

Conqueror (as I will refer to it from now on) is the story of Yuri, a dude who dies and get reincarnated in another world (wow how original), what conqueror does to set itself apart is make Yuri a persecuted minority, I am not joking.

Yuri is a member of the Shanti people, a weird elf-like race of humans who are different to regular humans (Kulati) and who have been politically and religiously persecuted and genocided for hundreds of years as of the beginning of the story. Mostly because they are an easy and weak common enemy for all of mankind and there are many political and economic incentives to killing or enslaving all of them.

Yuri is then basically forced to stand up for his people and fight against the coming extermination, the book is a pretty straight forward story which only gathers tension as Yuri (rather suddenly) grows up and then has to assume more and more responsibilities and protect more and more people, the sacrifices he's forced to make and the lives he's forced to take as the tension ramps up make the latter volumes the undisputed best of the series.

The story takes place in an alternate version of earth in the Scandinavian peninsula which is now called the Kingdom of Shiyalta, now Shiyalta in itself isn't really that different from any other generic setting in isekai and that is where my complaints with conqueror mainly lie.

The thing with conqueror is that it doesn't excel in any particular ways with its worldbuilding (or any other aspect of its writing). For one, there's no magic (which may count as a positive or a negative depending on how you look at it), there are some fantastical creatures like dragons or giant eagles but most of the story revolves around normal humans in a late-medieval time period, only with alternative history and cultures. There is very little "fantasy" to the world of conqueror and while it does detract from the awe-factor the book might've had, grounding it in realism opens new doors for storytelling.

What conqueror does well is go one or two extra steps further than most isekai, it puts in just that small additional amount of work that makes it stand out from its contemporaries. The cultures of the Shanti and Kulati are certainly the most developed parts of its world, specially the Shanti who are quite unique, while the Kulati more conventionally mimic and remix cultures from our own world.

The Shanti are a matriarcal society, which is quite the rarity in isekai. Their socio-political organization with matriarch-led families, the so called "witches", leading the government and patriarch-led chieftain families leading the country's armies, their strange relationship with their bird mounts and their long and complex history are probably the standout points of conqueror's worldbuilding. The politics and social divides of the world between the Shanti and Kulati are interesting and take cues from our own world, but there being two different species of human adds and extra edge not seen when talking about humans vs humans or totally alien creatures vs humans. We often get isekai stories where a racial conflict is looked upon from the perspective of the humans, because we are humans and that's a logical thing to do, but viewing the world from the perspective of a persecuted people trapped at their last stand is thrilling and really cements the war with the Kulati as an inevitable, looming threat.

The future of the world and how finally reversing the tide of Kulati conquest will change the politics of different countries has me hungry for the next volume, conqueror's worldbuilding only becomes more interesting and intricate as it goes on, and while it doesn't do anything particularly crazy with it, it doesn't do anything particularly wrong either (except maybe some uninspired character and place names) so it gets a pass from me.

Protagonist:
Our protagonist is Yuri Ho, an Isekai'd wagie who gets reborn in this world to a chieftain family, the Ho clan. And there's no easy to say this... Yuri is probably the worst character in the whole story.

Yuri is very much one of the proto-typical, goodie-two-shoes, highly intelligent, always confident, always handsome male leads which infest isekai. What does work to try to set him apart are two core aspects. For starters, Yuri is very driven towards a defined goal, i.e. not getting genocided, this keeps him from being incredibly passive and only acting when the story forces him to, Yuri consistently tries to do things which further his goals and he takes initiative to achieve what he wants, he's not just some laid back idiot being taken along for the ride.

The second point is that Yuri is not completely moral and always good like many other isekai leads. This ties in with a larger theme in conqueror about death: Yuri kills people, many people, he does horrible and reprehensible things for understandable reasons but he's never completely in the right, you can look at his actions and disagree with them and see him as morally gray. Killing his enemies holds more weight than just slashing away at hordes of mobs for Xp, each kill matters and is never played as "totally justified" like in many other stories. Sometimes Yuri kills because he has no other option, sometimes he does it because keeping his enemy alive will ruin his plans in the future and sometimes he does it out of pure selfishness and rage.

All of this praise, however, does not keep Yuri from being kind of bland for a lot of the story (specially the early volumes), he's confident about all of his choices, he always has a plan, he excels at pretty much everything he does, he doesn't have overpowered abilities (and this does get used a couple of times to actually introduce some vulnerability to his character) but he always seems to be two steps ahead of his enemies due to his previous life knowledge. Yuri rarely ever looks vulnerable and whenever he does it's only because other people around him are placed in danger, if Yuri didn't love anyone and didn't have attachments for his enemies to exploit then he'd basically become invincible.

Yuri is very much a product of the Rudeus brand of leads, just strutting around and owning the place for most of the story while sometimes fucking up and having a big cry moment, the only thing he has over his forefathers is not being so passive (one of my biggest gripes with Rudeus).

All in all: Not terrible but also not the best (which ironically places him in the top 1% of isekai leads lol).

Main characters:
Conqueror's mains are a mixed bag of greatness and forgettable nonsense.

Some characters, like Mylo and Carol, are fucking great. Carol starts off as an annoying asshole but she becomes a lot more relatable and likeable as time goes on. And Mylo is simply my personal favorite character in the whole thing.

But apart from those two there's really not that much to look forward to. Yuri's dad is cool but forgettable, his gaggle of love interests are all so forgettable that I can't even remember their names. People in the castle, the company and the academy all kind of blend together because they just don't really matter.
One of the worst offenders though has to be Yuri's cousin (who is also in love with him for whatever fucking reason) and she exemplifies a huge issue I have with conqueror's handling of characters: Timeskips.

For whatever twisted reason Fudeorca loves using huge timeskips where several months or years go by and the characters age up so other stuff can happen. But these also function as a sneaky way for him to basically go "Oh the characters have known each other for yeaaaaars now so they're good friends!" which I really do not like. Character development does not work like this, you can't just establish Yuri meeting someone, then boom timeskip, then he suddenly gets along with them. This happens with Yuri's academy roommates who both hate his guts and then are suddenly friends with him, his cousin which he starts to bond with in an interesting scene and then boom timeskip, oh they already bonded years ago, and one of the antagonists who while somewhat telegraphed that she was gonna become antagonistic the story also expects you to subconsciously add a bunch of more "in-between" time skipped scenes that the writer was too lazy to do so that her eventual betrayal makes sense!

Antagonists and Minor characters:
In my opinion, Conqueror's greatest characters can be found in its supplementary cast and antagonists. It's just that their potential hasn't been fully tapped yet.

The few characters we get to know in the Kulati side, who are as oblivious to the Shanti as we are to them, have this uniquely mysterious vibe. Some of them are sympathetic characters which are obviously going to play a much greater role in future, others are despicable villains that have more depth than just a cursory glance can reveal.

Of course, enemies do not just exist in the enemy nations, forces within Shiyalta itself pose formidable threats, but their buildup as villains is somewhat mishandled in my opinion, even if their ends are my favorite part of the series so far.

All-in-all conqueror doesn't have too many characters, but a lot of them play such meaningless roles and appear so little that you will forget about them anyway. Definitely not the author's strong suit.

Conqueror's pacing (as discussed in the characters section) is its biggest issue overall, the constant timeskips and seemingly unfinished story beats as the story jumps forwards to the next setpiece are jarring and make the first 3 or so volumes less than stellar reading experiences. The beginning of the first volume is downright boring, I couldn't care less about Yuri's pre-isekai life which barely affects his character afterwards. The first chapters seem in a rush to age Yuri up so the author can do the things they want to do and get to the storylines they want to tell, but the way it is handled is awkward and ends up being more confusing than anything. At least I didn't care much for it.

This issue keeps churning while Yuri still has growing to do up to about the 5th volume, when Yuri is essentially an adult and the story slows down to a much more enjoyable wartime narrative. Before that the whole thing just feels like this anthology of disconnected events and stories which sort-of build on top of each other but make the story VERY floaty.

The style of conqueror is standard for isekai, the language used fits with the time period and the characters speak like they're supposed to in relation to their personalities and backgrounds. A good thing about having no magic is that conqueror has absolutely no destructive plot devices, no powerleveling, no nonsense of any kind. The story could honestly be re-worked to not even be an isekai and it would work just as well.

The tone sort of fluctuates between lighthearted isekai adventure and serious political drama for the first few volumes, though it isn't as jarring as it sounds and it stays mostly consistent, it certainly doesn't cheapen out suspenseful moments for a quick laugh. In the latter half the series quite masterfully transitions into a much darker and much more serious tone, things are bleak and the characters are forced to make tough choices as everything crumbles around them and the extermination only looms closer.

The themes are, without a doubt, conqueror's best aspect. As briefly touched upon before, conqueror is a wartime story, and death is treated as a very serious and very real consequence. Many of the kills in the series, specially those executed by Yuri himself, are described in great detail to denote their brutality and the impact of taking a life. People aren't just killed off with a quick laugh, dispatched emotionlessly because they aren't friends with the MC and therefore are irredeemably evil; people die in brutal fashion and their deaths aren't pretty, the characters don't cheer when killing because it isn't a fun or happy thing to do.

Conqueror explores topics of religious ideology, racial persecution, cold-hearted politics and the desperation of those who know they have no escape from eradication The Shanti aren't treated as poor little victims, they were once powerful and cruel and when their power waned, they were used as a escape goat for the other countries to maintain peace over a shared enemy. There's no morals shoved down your throat, simply the circumstances which created the status quo and which would've been normal in such a world and society. It is clearly pointed out that the Shanti squabbled amongst themselves, refused to adapt to new technologies or reach out to outside countries and have a corrupt, rotting political system which makes it impossible for them to ever fight back.

There's a great deal of opportunity in future storylines for this series in regards to how Yuri's actions will affect the status quo, and those are probably the most exciting prospects for the series as a whole.

Conqueror is a fine series for what it is, with average characters, a somewhat generic world and yet tons of potential for a great and engaging story going forward. While it may have been no better than any of its contemporaries at first, once the main narrative engine gets going the book can be quite a fascinating read. It doesn't commit any particularly egregious literally sins and it does most things better than other isekai (which isn't saying a lot).

Overall a fine read if you like isekai.

Positives
  • Interesting and unique setting
  • Engaging narrative (in the latter half)
  • Great wartime story
  • Doesn't rely on cheap, contrived plot devices or other narrative cancer, solidly written
  • Isekai which is done with some semblance of competency
Negatives
  • Pacing is all over the place (in the first half)
  • So-so characters, generic lead
  • Boring start, lackluster first few volumes
Final Score
65/100 Better than most.

Dandadan's first episode is out. I was grinning from ear to ear the entire time. The first episode was literally a perfect adaptation. If it keeps up the quality it's an easy shoe in for AOTY and potentially one of the best in the last handfull of years.

To make matters worse, episode 2 went to a small outsourcing studio who outsourced it even more to like 8 studios and directors were changed to hentai animators. The main director is someone who has been blacklisted from the industry.
Don't know if this is true or not but :BijouBijou:

Pretty meh season for new anime this season besides the sequels and remakes which is fine for me, more time to watch vtubers I guess. Someone already mentioned Dandadan, the only legit promising one. There are a few more airing in the next few days, but so far..

Orb: On the Movements of the Earth - Story is set in historical Poland where the Church is inquisition-ing heretics, some kid genius who was supposed to be studying theology but is instead doing science-y things like the theory that the Earth orbits the Sun. A kid getting tortured was not on my bingo card for this season..

Ranma 1/2 2024 remake - Very faithful remake of the original anime, they even got almost all the original JP voice actors back to reprise their old roles. Tis comfort food for 90s anime fans .

Kenshin Remake season 2 - Similar to Ranma, but they've finally gotten to the good season aka the Kyoto Arc. First season was kinda boring setup, finally we get to the fights, hope this remake does them justice.

The Stories of Girls Who Couldn't Be Magicians - Wants to be Little Witch Academia but without the creativity or charm. Plot is boilerplate magic academy shenanigan only redeeming quality is the pretty pastel art style that looks like a kids story book.

Stuff I'm watching this season:

Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Kyoto Douran

The best arc heck even one of the best arcs in shonen anime as whole. I'm really hoping they manage to do the fights here justice especially the Kenshin vs Aoshi battle.

MF Ghost Season 2
Thoroughly enjoyed the first season so this is a no brainer. More racing and eurobeat in the mix? Yes please.

Thunderbolt Fantasy: Touriken Yuuki 4

Season 4 of kino puppetry. Bless fansubbers because CR has yet to announce this in their simulcast lineup.

Ranma 1/2 Remake

Really enjoyed the remake of Urusei Yatsura so this is an instant pickup.

Trillion Game
Two friends bullshitting their way to become trillionaires. I already read a bit of the manga but the anime really exemplifies how over the top this series is

Tsuma, Shougakusei ni Naru.

I'll admit the premise of this series is pretty questionable but curiosity got the best of me. It was a real good move of them to release 2 episodes from the get-go because episode 2 sets the tone of this series going forward and is looking to be a real tearjerker of a series.

Raise wa Tanin ga Ii

I can fix him Let's make each other worse.

Dandadan
What else needs to be said?

Pretty good season for me because I barely watched anything last season.

His stuff is great. Especially his autobiography of himself and his cat done is his usual horrifying art style. I highly recommend you check out some of his anthologies or something like Gyo, Uzumaki, or Hellstar Remina.
