Bringing this up from earlier: this is a really good video breaking down why the PS1 graphics look the way they do.
It's truly amazing how that console ever came to be. It was straight up not ready to do 3D, but they were just like, fuck it, this is what we can do to release it even close to affordable. 3D graphics were new and amazing at the time, so it got a large install base, resulting in devs basically trying to make games out of Lincoln Logs that phase in and out of place. Fascinating and amusing to think how much of an impact that console has had. Easily top 5 of most important consoles.
For PC, if devs wanted to make a "retro" game, they could load up PCEm, select something from a time period, and make a game that runs on it. Good fucking luck, I say, as most of these devs are just hipsters, very few actual computer nerds.
