Debatable. Yes, hard shell tacos have been mention in the 1890s but its acutal populatirty didn't begin in the US until the 1950's. If you just mean a crunchy taco as in a tortilla becoming hard then yeah I can see that to be true. Either way soft shell tacos are better.

The crunchy hard taco gives the meal texture since most mexican meat has the consistency of either dog slop or rubber chew toy. It's no wonder why Norman Borlough had to teach them how to farm wheat. They'd starve themselves with their cooking.

Hardshell is and only is for ground beef.
Softshell is for fajita, chicken, pork, barbacoa, basically anything else but ground beef.
If you put ground beef in a soft tortilla, you probably think mcdonalds has good hamburgers.
If you use corn tortilla for anything but hardshell, you probably think dry cornflakes is good breakfast.
