Maybe it started as a way to oppose people who do that but now I see it used for any kind of argument which doesn't get people riled the fuck up. Just like toxic masculinity it has lost all meaning and is now just thrown around to mean "people are not dooming as much as me".
The word "toxic" in general is such a broad accusation that it's meaningless, it's a label people give out if they want to hurt someone's reputation without articulating a reason to justify it.

It is a modern problem (or at least more prevalent in modern times) but it's 100% real. That's how we end with so much garbage shit being pushed at the top of charts or in any medium, really, like Sinder's own CPR cover that became a meme for that own reason. Personally, I feel Toxic Positivity in game development is one of the major reasons companies lose money and become tone-deaf, as no critique is taken or if it is, it's at their own terms (yes Bandai Namco this is for you, fucking fags).
