Yeah, I've seen some absolute dogs chasing premium pricing. I'd bet she'd be able to look good with some better lighting and makeup, but she's personified dogshit and you can only do so much with shit.

A good example of a comparison I can think of offhand, Kson without makeup vs Kson with makeup. She's kind of where I'd say a bit below average, or at least very low end of average. With all the makeup on though, she's really pretty. Granted yeah, with vs without is always a bit of a no-brainer with makeup because well done makeup, that's the entire point, accentuating the face in ways that makes it more pleasing/attractive but Kson's an example where someone who I would say is a 4 or maybe 5 without is a 9 with.

I fail to particularly see the big grift of this beyond positive word of mouth. People making independent fanart/fanmerch without direct connection to the VTuber means that there is no direct financial grift boom aspect to it.

It's not an explicit grift but it is clout-chasing. The initial wave of support seemed like earnest support for Kusa, especially from the Phase girls and some of the indies they've made stuff for since it was a member of their community being targeted; now it's broken out of that particular bubble it's just become easy, shallow retweet-bait for anyone who wants to virtue signal about the new current thing. Pretty much a "we love artists!" round two.
