I think Ame's home 3D studio is a good example. She built it during her time in Hololive using the money she earned via Hololive, and used it for Hololive work. Yet she gets to keep it as an indie because it is owned by her and not Cover. For an employee sure. For an hourly contractor, if you make it during your billed time, sure. Vtuber talents are neither, one relevant factor for independent contractor status is that you use your own tools and have control over how you do the work. She couldn't own anything that depends on Cover IP like characters models, sure, but she could absolutely make things like VR environments that she owned herself and licensed to Cover, or that would revert to her after a set period, because that kind of deal is absolutely normal for a creative working as a contractor.
I remember people saying back then that Cover should have provided her extra funding and supported her in building it. I argued against that point for this exact same reason, if Cover had helped her back then they might have demanded for ownership of the studio.
(Interesting note: Her home studio probably lead to many teamates being caught off-guard by her not-graduation announcement. Many people thought she wouldn't graduate anytime soon since she was still constantly working on her studio which they considered as Hololive work. In fact, she talked about working on it like 5 days before the announcement. Many teamates didn't consider the possibility of the studio being used outside of Hololive work.)
